Continuing that series on elderhood: Let me talk about what I call spiritual love. Elders, having that deep connection to a higher power, experience also the power of love. What the heck does this love mean? It's not romantic love. It's not the love that we usually have for a spouse, or significant other or our children. It's unlimited love, for life, the earth everything that is alive, including animals and plants, anything that has consciousness. That love is a mixture of gratitude, appreciation, deep caring, and compassion. Another way we might look at it is how God loves every living being of creation at the same time.

Let me be honest. I am really struggling with describing that love because it's so much beyond what we imagine, so much beyond what we normally experience. How can I describe it if I have never experienced it? It's not that I have never experienced it. But when I experienced it, it is just that moment in time, that flash of understanding, and then it is gone. I have been really sitting with it and wondering how the heck am I going to describe that love? Because it is so much beyond our intellectual knowing.

Maybe the best added description, at least for me, having experienced how the earth loves me. Experiencing that embrace of the earth when I was in a low point and I basically called out: please hold me. I could feel being held. How often do we sort of pray: please can I have ......... Sometimes we get it and sometimes not. That kind of love has no judgment about our request and, at the same time, knows what is good for us; that we will grow more if we don't get this.

In a way it is similar to the way I look at darkness and light. Darkness is necessary for me to perceive the light. I don't know what it was that created the desire to only have light in one's life. Light is not good as darkness is not bad. Both are an energy, a vibration. The Universe just sees what is, it does not judge

So in a way, choosing to access that kind of love. I am emitting a vibration without the need to prove anything. It's a state of being that I'm choosing, a state of being that I have experienced. So what if we choose to love in the best possible way we can, from the highest space of being that we can be at, and be that person or become that person?

I'm leaving you with the invitation to contemplate that incredible, unlimited form of love and see what it brings up for you. I would love to hear from you what ideas it triggers in you.
